Rooted in a 4,000 year history, the saree is synonymous with strength, resilience, and femininity in South Asia. From the terracotta figurines of the Indus Valley Civilization, to the zardozi of Mughal courts, and crisp cottons during colonialization, the saree is a garment that has evolved and endured. Modest or modern, regal or rebellious, it is shapeless, unstructured, and non-conforming; a saree does not dictate identity itself, but expresses the freedoms and forms of those who wear it.
